Mr. Goodman: The Kiteman

Mr. Goodman: The Kiteman highlights the immense and idiosyncratic collection of Malcolm Goodman, an English engineer turned kite connoisseur. Conceived by Kite Club and designed and edited in collaboration with Maharam, the volume honors Goodman's expansive life in kiting.

Offering a "unique record of a personal journey," the book presents the graphic impact of flyable artworks with Scheltens & Abbenes photography, alongside essays by Emily King and Bertjan Pot that touch on historical and contemporary kite culture and design.

Kite Club, a collective of kite enthusiasts, includes creative director Peter Hebbing, industrial designer Bertjan Pot, and the photographers Maurice Scheltens and Liesbeth Abbenes. Originating in a shared passion for single-line kites, the collective now facilitates a range of exhibitions, workshops, and publications, including One Single Kite (2025), which details the kite-making process.

Presented in collaboration with Kite Club, Mr. Goodman: The Kiteman at Kunsthal Rotterdam features over 300 kites from the collection of Malcolm Goodman. The exhibition is on view through August 30, 2026.

It is this combination of the rare and precious with the ephemeral and the pragmatic that makes kites and the practice of collecting them so special.
